明暗對照法(Chiaroscuro)語源於義大利詞語「光」(chiaro)和「暗」(oscuro)是一種強調光影之間強烈對比的繪畫技巧。此技巧的起源最早可以追溯至古希臘畫家阿波羅多羅斯(Apollodoros)所創造出的陰影繪畫(skiagraphia)開啟了陰影繪畫的發展。文藝復興時期,馬薩其奧(Masaccio, 1401-1428)、達文西(Leonardo da Vinci, 1452-1519)等畫家開始嘗試利用光影漸變創造畫作中的三維深度與現實感。卡拉瓦喬 (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571-1610)以單一強大的光源營造作品亮暗鮮明對比著稱,這樣的戲劇性,為其作品帶來強烈的個人色彩與情感表現。林布蘭 (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, 1606-1669)也是相當喜好運用明暗對照法的畫家。他經常運用戲劇性的舞台光,巧妙地賦予畫面深度與獨特氛圍,使得場景與視覺敘事更顯張力。

觀者可以透過欣賞這些運用明暗對照法的作品,學習技巧重點。首先要注意畫面中明暗對比的運用。仔細注意明度和對比,透過高光與陰影的佈局突顯畫作中的重要元素,這不僅有助於創造出深度感,同時也能營造出更豐富的戲劇性效果。其次,注意輪廓清晰度與柔和層次如何變化。物體銳利清晰的邊緣加上柔和擴散的層次能創造出具有光源強度的空氣氛圍效果。此外,適當運用寒暖色調的視覺特性,能明暗對照法的視覺效果加分。透過運用視知覺上暖色調呈現前進感,以及冷色調產生後退效果,畫者可以在畫作中運用暖色調於高光處,並在陰影區域中選擇冷色調,以此差異明顯的手法來優化明暗對比,使色調效果更為精緻。最後是光源的設定。單一光源能拉開照射區域與未被光源照射區域的對比反差,有效營造三維深度與畫面戲劇性。
