Český Krumlov, with its rich history and charming architecture, including castles, churches, and ancient streets, seems to tell the stories of the past at every turn. Additionally, the picturesque Vltava River adds to the town’s allure, offering serene and beautiful riverside walks. In the enchanting Český Krumlov, every corner is worth a closer look, revealing countless breathtaking sights. When exploring Český Krumlov, travelers typically divide the town into the following three main areas.

01. Latrán District

The Latrán District is located on the left bank of the Vltava River and is one of Český Krumlov’s historic quarters. Today, it shares its name with the street that begins at the Budějovická Gate, passes over the Lazebnický Bridge, and leads to the square. Key highlights of the Latrán District include:

  • Church of St. Jošt (Kostel svatého Jošta)
  • Budějovická Gate (Budějovická brána) (Latrán 104)
  • Egon Schiele Brewery (Zámecký pivovar)

02. The State Castle of Český Krumlov

Built in 1240, Český Krumlov Castle is located on the left bank of the Vltava River and is the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. The core of the castle complex consists of the tower and the adjacent small castle (Hrádek), with other buildings and palaces arranged around five courtyards. To the southwest lies the castle garden. Declared a national cultural monument in 1989 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the castle stands as a testament to the region’s rich historical and architectural heritage.

The Red Gate, First Courtyard, Small Park, Stone Fountain, Stone Bridge, Moat, and Castle Bear. Proceed to the Second Courtyard (Lower Castle Area), Small Castle (Castle No. 59), Painted Tower (Castle Tower), Castle Library, Mint (Castle No. 59), and Castle Fountain. Walk through the Connecting Corridor to the Third Courtyard and Upper Castle (Castle No. 59). Continue to the Fourth Courtyard, Cloak Bridge, and Fifth Courtyard. Discover the Castle Theatre, Renaissance House (Castle No. 177), Winter Riding School (Castle No. 178), and the Castle Gardens.

03. Vnitřní město

The Inner Town (Vnitřní město) on the right bank of the Vltava River is connected to the Latrán District via the Lazebnický Bridge.

Begin on Radniční Street and proceed to nám. Svornosti Square, where you’ll find the impressive Plague Column. Nearby, the Town Hall Building and the Český Krumlov Visitor Center are key points of interest. Continue down Panská Street, passing Vlašský dvůr at No. 32, and Švamberský dům at No. 35. As you explore Široká Street, don’t miss the Renaissance buildings of the former municipal brewery and the Egon Schiele Art Centrum.

For another exploration route in the Inner Town, start at Náměstí Na Louži and stroll down Kájovská Street. Pay special attention to the House at Krčín Street Corner (Na Louži, dům č.p. 54). From there, turn right onto Kostelní Street and visit the Church of St. Vitus (Kostel svatého Víta) and the Kaplanka.

When planning your itinerary, be sure to factor in travel time. It’s advisable to spend at least one night in Český Krumlov to fully enjoy the town’s romantic evening atmosphere. If you plan to stay overnight in the town, pack light. The streets are primarily cobblestone, so large luggage can be cumbersome and inconvenient. The noise from wheels rolling over the stones can not only spoil the scenic charm but also lead to potential damage to your suitcase.
